Aisleyne on "The Culture Show" - BBC201 July 2008
The discussion was illustrated with clips from Big Brother and from the historic 1950's television dramatised version of the novel. In the introductions of the panellists they inevitably showed Aisleyne's "know yourself" clip, as Ash confessed that she had not previously read the book. In the discussion itself, Aisleyne made some telling contributions. She compared the Friday night eviction crowd with the "two-minute hate" of the novel. She also identified the Big Brother nature of the society in which we live, citing the degree of surveillance now possible via debit cards, mobile phones etc. "Why call BB housemates crazy?", she challenged us, "when the state we're living in now is totally Big Brother." In comparison, it seems that Pete's contributions must have ended up on the cutting room floor, as his input consisted of only one word; yes "that" word, though it could be argued that it WAS "in context". Overall, we thought that Aisleyne more than held her own in the debate and seeing her in the company of the redoubtable Greer and Feltz, Paul Morley would surely agree that it indeed confirmed her status as a "feminist icon".
