From "What's On in Waltham Forest"

Thursday 24 November
4.15 to 6.30pm
St John's Churchyard,
Church Lane - Leytonstone Town Centre

Join us to celebrate the beginning of the festive season where we switch on the Christmas tree, library and street lights of Leytonstone. We will be joined by a TV celebrity as well as civic and local stakeholders. With free childrens entertainment including a Santa Grotto, Rodeo Reindeer and face painters the evening will be one to remember! Don't miss St Johns Church Open Day and the Church Yard Trail where lanterns will be lighted.

And the TV celebrity doing the switch-on is .... Aisleyne!

(Note - this appointment does not change the recent statement in the gossip thread about Aisleyne's current family commitments curtailing her public appearances. This is a longstanding arrangement which won't take up a lot of time or travelling, so Aisleyne agreed to fulfil the engagement.)

So Leytonstone gets Aisleyne while in Derby we get Gareth Gates.

According to this blogger's nationwide review of 2011 Christmas light switch-ons , this was "possibly the best booking in the whole of the UK". Who are we to disagree?

They also seem to concur with boldjohn's assessment re Derby's luck vis-a-vis Leytonstone's, and I'm also rather pleased to see my comment on a DS Showbiz forum thread quoted ie "Leytonstone knows itself".

The troubles of Barbardier, the seasonal decline of the Rams, Gareth Gates and Joe McWhatisface Not sure if Derby will ever recover. Credit to Leytonstone for its self awareness.
